Newtown has many cafes and clothing thrift shops, and it's a long stretch of road so it's pretty easy to walk and explore. One of the cafes here is Black Star Pastry which is famous for their Watermelon Cake! But it's non-vegan so we didn't visit (they do have a vegan brownie(?) though). Other all-vegan eateries in Newtown that we didn't manage to go to was Gigi's Pizzeria and Golden Lotus Vegan.

After going to NYC and Melbourne (and now Sydney), I'm quite sure that places in Western countries with many vegan eateries look similar, in the sense that it looks slightly run-down from the outside ..hmmm..  Not that it affects anything but just an observation!

We went from White Rabbit Gallery → Lentil as Anything → Superfood Sushi → Gelato Blue but I'll start with Superfood Sushi since I need a landscape photo as the first one lol.

✧ Superfood Sushi
Superfood Sushi is an all-vegan Japanese-style cafe! I'm quite sure that it's the only vegan Japanese eatery in Sydney. I've been to Beyond Sushi in NYC and this has a similar feel! The not-so-authentic Japanese feel haha but I guess it's to be expected since we're not in Japan lol.

The food here is pretty affordable!

Mum and I shared the dumplings ($4) and combo of Sweet Kiwi Nut + Mad 'Bout Yuzu + Sea Fruit Inari + Cheeky Chi ($14.5)

The dumplings are served with mayo which seems like a weird combination but it was great! Really liked the mayo!

✧ Lentil as Anything
I was most excited to eat here!! It was quite packed when we arrived at about 12.30pm.

Isn't this wonderful :')

Their menu changes based on what ingredients they have I guess! We had the moussaka, curry, chocolate cake, hot chai and orange-grapefruit juice.

Portion sizes are on the smaller side but it doesn't really matter since you can order as much as you want anyway. It was really yummy! The rice was fluffy and fragrant, and though both dishes contained lentils (omg does every dish contain lentils here since that's what this place is called..?) they didn't taste the same, and the chocolate cake has a crunchy top and was pretty rich! :)

✧ Gelato Blue
Gelato Blue used to be non-vegan but they switched to using coconut milk in their ice cream earlier this year, making it 100% vegan yay!

They have so many flavours!!!!! The official opening time was 3pm but it opened slightly earlier at 2.50pm or so, and when we arrived it was quite crowded (even though it's winter)!

We shared this Pistachio and Dragonfruit+coconut+lime gelato, and mum (she isn't really an ice cream person) got a Chai tea with almond milk too. They have a sitting area inside which was nice and warm haha ^^

There are many clothing shops along Newtown street. Not all are cheap but we found one that was (not the one in this photo), and I scored a pair of $10 sunnies yay!

✧ White Rabbit Gallery
I was looking for something else we could do at Newtown in between all that eating, and I found out about this contemporary Chinese art collection which has really good reviews! Then I realised it wasn't in Newtown lol but we still went because it was a break from just eating and shopping.. and it's free!

They also have a tea house but we didn't try anything there.

It's located at quite an ulu (deserted) place - we walked through a graffiti-ed street to get here and I was doubting whether this art gallery was worth going to lol.

They have different exhibits on show at different dates and when we went it was Heavy Artillery. At every hour (if I'm not wrong) there's a guided tour of the exhibits. We arrived at 10.45am and waited for the 11am one, and I'm glad we did! I half expected the tour guide to be Chinese (it's Chinese art after all) but though she was Australian (I think) she explained everything really well and entertainingly! There were about 15 people in the group and mum & I were the only Asians lol

By the way from the front of this sculpture it looks like the thousand-hand Guanyin(?).

These rocks are paintings! So cool

It's quite a small gallery but quality > quantity and the tour was about 45 mins-1 hour long! I don't remember much of it but it was interesting when I was listening and I felt less uncultured haha

Also they had this cool levitating & rotating rock sculpture which was my favourite though I can't recall what it means. Pardon the low quality photo oops I screenshot-ed this from a video.

Overall the White Rabbit Gallery is really worth a visit! A little out-of-the-way but the tour was great and the exhibits came in many different mediums and weren't boring and it's free! ^^

Hi there! Got back from Sydney a few days ago and I shall (slowly) blog about my trip. It's the 1-month winter break now! Met mum in Sydney because it's expensive to go back to SG and somewhere else haha

I'm doing it in the same format as the Tokyo trip (omg saw what I did and I'm shocked at the amount of effort I put into planning the itinerary lol wow) and will link posts to the itinerary below! Here's the Google Maps with all the locations (green = food, purple = attractions, red = didn't manage to go).  It's pretty easy to get from one place to another just by using Google Maps and the Opal Travel app. We spent upwards of $70 each on transport alone though we walked quite a bit. There's a free CBD shuttle (Route 555) but we never tried taking it!

Because I planned this, it revolves around vegan food lol with some touristy stuff, shopping and one art gallery to feel less uncultured. Maybe because I've been in Australia for a while, things weren't as fascinating haha but I still had fun! Also first time taking a plane alone omg é•¿å¤§äº†

I'll try to finish this within the remaining 2 weeks of the break... but it always takes longer than I plan to. Haven't even blogged about Melbourne or (the few places I've been to in) Brisbane or the last couple of Tokyo posts omg lol ^^;

Matcha is a rising health food trend, and it's no wonder because the ancient Japanese tea is a powerhouse of antioxidants and provides 'slow-release' caffeine. The folks at Your Tea have kindly sent me their Matcha Tea to try!

The packaging is gorgeous and the box set comes with 25 sachets of organic superior grade matcha, a ceremonial bamboo whisk and a recipe booklet!

I used it in a smoothie bowl made with 1 sachet of matcha + 3 bananas + handful of spinach + almond milk + lemon juice :)

I'm having the matcha as a tea right now and I must say that it's really fragrant and smooth, and it dissolves well without a powdery consistency.

Thanks once again to Ana  from Your Tea for sending me your Matcha Tea! ^^ You can read more about their matcha here

Whoops I've not blogged at all since I came here! I think I've mentioned it somewhere before but I'm in Brisbane studying Nutrition & Dietetics at Queensland University of Technology by the way :)

I've got a year's worth of credit points already because I studied Nutrition in SP so I'm technically starting from Year 2 though there a Year 2 module I'm exempted from and a Year 1 mod that I need to take.

Studying here has been fine so far (this coming week is Week 8 of the school term) though I had an Omg what am I doing here?? moment during Food & Nutrition lecture when I realised they count calories in kjoules (and then another ????? moment when I found out that a tablespoon measurement is 20ml & 1 tbsp is 4 teaspoons and yet another ????? moment - 1 serving of grains is 1 slice of bread). Hahaha no wonder I need to take F&N though it's a Year 1 mod.

-Randomly inserting food photos lol-

I stay in a sharehouse a walking distance from school with 5 other girls who are also Asians. Lol I signed the contract over in Singapore without viewing the house here first - come to think about it so many things could've gone wrong haha but I'm really lucky to get such nice housemates! :) Also coincidentally there are two Dietetics year 1s and one Nutrition year 3 here wow such luck.

The house is pretty retro (and I wear shoes into my carpeted room) but it's quite comfortable. I was worried about there not being any air-conditioning (just a ceiling fan in my room) because I've slept in an air-con room my whole life. It was really hot at the beginning so I had to buy a standing fan and sleep with both fans on but gradually it got colder yay!!

For my 21st birthday my housemates made me a cute vegan cake aww

Parents sent me cupcakes too T.T

Also my Singaporean friends (also in Dietetics/Nutrition) surprised me with this at Pancake Manor hehe

The weather has been good here too! Mornings are cool (about 19 deg C at 7am today) though it gets pretty sunny around noon. So glad to be escaping the heat in Singapore!! ^^; I stay near the Kelvin Grove campus and there are lots of hills(?) and the road is like /\/\/\/\/\ hahaha so we're always hiking to school.

And I have recently started exercising. Recently as in yesterday LOL. My housemate runs a lot and I ran with her once a couple weeks back (at at park nearby that I previously didn't know existed) and it was really tiring though we ran just 2.4km (she ran in the morning already!!!)(my only motivation was the fear of getting lost) and my legs and core were aching for a few days after hahahaha #weak. Like literally the last time I jogged must've been a year ago? And I rarely ever jogged continuously. So yeah yesterday and just now I went to jog and successfully jogged about 2.5km non-stop yay me. Took me 18 mins but that's okay. Hopefully it becomes a routine!

Also you'd think that things are expensive but other than prepared food (as in food court food etc) most things are quite affordable. We're always looking at supermarket/store catalogs to see the deals though hahaha #auntymodeon

Grocery hauls from the Saturday market near school

There isn't really much to do in Brisbane and my life is basically school - assignments - grocery shopping - cooking - eating - sleeping - watching Korean shows ^^;

Okay that's all for now! Gotta do an assignment ugh group work ugh presentation

Thanks for reading! :)
I call these spring-clean cookies because I baked these to use up the health foods/ baking ingredients I have haha. I recently packed my kitchen cupboards and realised that I have lots of ingredients bought over the years. Lots of which are impulse buys from iHerb lolol ^^;

They've been untouched for many months/years (oops) and now I'm trying to use the still-working ones up within the next 2 months because I'll be going to Brisbane to study in February.

(Also by the way I still have a couple posts left for Tokyo hahaha omg but I was busy the last few weeks and it's been so long since the trip so I don't have any more feel to write them)

These cookies are inspired by livelearnloveeat.com and heavily adapted. The main point of these is to use up a recently-bought-but-neglected bag of wheat germ in my freezer haha. I also managed to clear some whole wheat flour, date paste, cacao nibs and Sweet Williams chocolate spread with this ^^

I think these tasted decent but it'll be better if I used chocolate chips/ sweet cacao nibs instead of regular cacao nibs! Also, thankfully my wheat germ wasn't bitter or rancid - if it is it should be thrown away because it's more harmful than beneficial.

I used a cookie dough scoop for this - the mixture didn't expand at all lol. The texture is dense, as you'd expect from a oat cookie.

I made large cookies too ^^

Cacao Wheat Germ Cookies

Makes 24 3-bite cookies

Ingredients
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1 cup quick oats (or rolled oats pulsed in food processor)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cacao nibs/chocolate chips/dried fruit
  • 3/4 cup date paste*
  • 1/2 cup tofu puree** (blend silken tofu until smooth)
  • 1/2 cup non-dairy milk/water
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Optional: chocolate drizzle
*Date paste/jam: Soak pitted dates in hot water for 10 mins. Blend drained dates until a smooth paste is formed. Store in the fridge or freezer.
**If you prefer more fat in your cookies replace some/all of the tofu puree with oil.

Method
  1. In a large bowl, mix together wheat germ, oats, flour, baking powder, baking soda and cacao nibs.
  2. In a food processor, blend date paste, tofu puree, non-dairy milk and vanilla extract until homogeneous.
  3. Add wet mixture to dry mixture. Stir until uniform or use a food processor.
  4. Scoop dough onto a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 150 deg C for 13-15 mins.
  5. Leave to cool slightly before removing from baking sheet.
  6. Drizzle chocolate sauce onto cookies if desired. Enjoy!
